What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins are veins (most commonly found in the leg) that are enlarged, bulging or twisted. This occurs when the valves in the legs begin to fail due to heredity, age, injury, or long periods of walking or standing. Varicose veins vary in size from smaller bulges to large, thick, ropy, cord-like veins. Left untreated, varicose veins can cause severe pain and health issues like venous ulcers.
Varicose veins are found in nearly 60% of Americans, with women having a slightly higher predisposition due to the effects of hormones, pregnancies and other factors.
What are spider veins?
Spider veins are smaller than varicose veins and are usually found on the face and legs (although they can occur elsewhere). Spider veins are usually red or blue web-like veins that appear on the surface of the skin when smaller blood vessels become dilated. Spider veins themselves usually are not a medical issue, but some of the factors causing them may create additional issues if not comprehensively treated.
